Is Your Website Mobile Friendly? No? You’re Literally Throwing Business Away
Discover our shocking findings on our random sample of Funeral Directors websites – why people WILL NOT choose these Funeral Directors, andthey are simply throwing business away…
People use their mobile phones for everything these days, including searching online, and guess what – if you’re website won’t work properly on their phone, they will simply leave and look for one that does.
This means that anyone who finds you when using their phone (or tablet, etc) – and that’s if they can find you, since Google drops non -mobile friendly websites out of the results displayed to phones – then they almost certainly won’t use you (lots of details and studies below).
As part of our process to help Funeral Directors to achieve more sales through their websites we recently conducted a simple analysis of 258 randomly selected Funeral Directors websites.
The results were shocking.
The website addresses were gathered from places that Funeral Directors are actually advertising their services such as online phone books like Yell, directories, etc.
We discovered that:
a) Just short of 11% of the websites listed by Funeral Directors were dead, i.e. the hosting had expired, the site was down, and in one case the Funeral Director had a new web address – but the old address that was still listed in Yell now sent bereaved people to a website full of Chinese pill sellers or whatever else they are pushing!
b) Just over 40% of all of the websites that we looked at were NOT mobile friendly.
You might wonder how important this is? To put it simply (full explanation below) if your website isn’t specifically designed to work on mobile phones, tablets, etc then it is losing you business.
Full stop, end of debate.
First Google will reduce the rankings of non mobile-friendly websites on searches made on mobile devices so no one can find you, and secondly (and more importantly) if someone on their phone looks at a website and they need to zoom in to read the text, or scroll to the left or right to see it all – they won’t buy from you either.
They will simply hit the “back” button and try one of your competitors websites and, keep going until they find one that does work on their phone.
Amazingly one of the worst offenders was a large UK funeral company who have furnished a lot of their franchisees with websites that look identical and that are also not mobile friendly.
You can check if your website is mobile friendly here with Google’s own website checker. And you know, whatever you might think – if Google says no then Google says no, and that’s that.
Whoever you are and whoever you represent – you’d better check now to be sure.
This is a BIG consideration that Google look at now and has a significant impact on how many people will find your website, and how many will become customers, and it will only become more and more important as time goes by.
c) Only the remainder of the websites we looked at were both live websites and mobile friendly.
If you’re one of them – congratulations, you just got rid of almost half of your competition in one stroke, and if your website converts visitors into customers as well (see here) then until they catch up you are truly flying and will beat your competitors hands down.
What is a mobile friendly website and why is it important?
A mobile friendly (also known as a mobile responsive) website is one that resizes and changes it’s appearance depending on whether the visitor is viewing it on a PC or laptop, mobile phone, tablet, or other device.
The biggest problem is with mobile phones because they have the smallest screen size.
A non-mobile friendly website will basically show either a miniature, shrunk down version of your website (the size of a large postage stamp) that the visitor has to zoom into in order to read the text, or will “spill out” from the screen meaning they need to scroll left or right to see it all.
If your website isn’t mobile friendly it makes it almost impossible to use on a phone or other device, and not surprisingly people using these devices tend to just leave and look for a website that will work.
People are (especially where online matters are involved) inherently lazy – they want it all laid out and easy, at the click of a button – messing around so that they have to try and accomodate you – forget it!
That means that you are indirectly sending them to your competitors, and you can work out roughly how much it is costing you lower down this page – and it could be a LOT of money.
The thing to really think about is that only 3 or 4 years ago this wasn’t important at all, mobile internet was nowhere – but this is a new frontier and things change very quickly and have very dramatic consequences.
Back then mobile internet was a pipe dream, today it is reality – if you don’t grab the horns of this stampeding technological change and ride with it, then you’re going to be left in the wilderness, wondering what happened and how you got left behind.
When you consider that today Google themselves estimate that around 97% of people search online for local goods and services, and 50%+ (and that number is growing) use mobile devices, typically phones, then you’d imagine that anyone with any kind of business sense would appreciate the value and importance of their website.
It appears however that a significant number of Funeral Directors do not “get it”, or simply do not understand how much business they could be throwing away.
You’ll be able to see the impact this will be having on your website if you think about your own behaviour when you search for things online.
Most people don’t go much beyond page 1 of the results, so if Google are pushing you down the rankings to the bottom of page 2, or page 3 or worse because your website won’t display properly on mobile devices, then a huge number of potential customers won’t even find you.
This will cost you a LOT of lost business.
If you do go to a website and find that it won’t display properly then you’ll probably leave that too, as does everyone else.
In each of these cases a website that won’t work on mobile devices like phones and tablets is clearly going to cost you a LOT of money in lost business.
But imagine a 3rd, even worse scenario (it might not apply to you – the 2 above are bad enough – but if this DOES apply to you too, then you’re REALLY throwing A LOT of money away) – if you are using Google Adwords or other advertising methods that cost you money.
Someone sees your Adwords ad and clicks it – that’s just cost you money.
They land on your website and leave – that’s just cost you money as well.
So you’re actually paying people to come to your website and then leave. You’re not just losing business because your website won’t display properly, you’re paying money to lose business!
You can actually calculate how much it is costing you to throw this business away very easily.
Back in early 2015 Google announced that over 50% of searches were now being made on mobile devices, although it could be 60% or more since it varies greatly by country – and that number will only get bigger.
Using just the 50% figure – if you spend say £500 per month on Google Adwords then at least 50% of that spend comes from people who click your ad from a mobile device.
Those people will leave your website when it won’t display properly on their phone or tablet, so you are throwing away half of your Adwords spend – £250 in this case – just because your website won’t work properly on the device your potential customer is using.
Imagine if you spend £1000 per month on Adwords, or £2000, or £3000 – the amount of money that you are throwing away could be truly horrific!
You could be looking at heading towards the cost of a brand new car, or a luxury holiday each and every year – that you are simply throwing away JUST IN ADVERTISING COSTS simply because your website won’t work properly on mobile devices.
And that DOES NOT include the LOST BUSINESS on top where people leave your website and use your competitors instead!
Just stop and think about that for a minute and the impact it is having on your business.
Then consider whether it is worth getting your website redesigned and rebuilt to stop this money from unnecessarily leaking out of your business, day in and day out.
If you estimate that your website is bringing you just 2 funerals per month, then using those conservative 50% numbers it must also be losing you at least 2 funerals per month as well.
How much do you make per funeral?
£700? Whatever the number double it and that is what is coming off your bottom line each and every month.
It’s not coming from your turnover, it’s coming out of your bottom line, your profit – the thing that keeps your business alive.
You are in effect just taking that money and handing it over without a struggle to your very grateful competitors.
And if your website brings you more than 2 funerals per month then that number is even bigger!
Whatever that number is take it and add half of your advertising budget per month on top and then multiply by 12, and you can see how much this simple and easily rectifiable problem is costing you per year, right now – and that number will only get bigger each year until you take action and fix the problem.
We estimate that the average funeral director with a website that won’t display properly on a mobile device could be losing between £45,000 and £60,000 per year of PROFIT – right off their bottom line – just from this one issue alone.
We offer a web design service that will fix this problem for you, and it will cost you less than 1 months lost revenue based on the numbers above.
The benefit to you is that not only will we provide you with a mobile responsive website that fixes all of these problems and that will not only stop this leak of money, we also focus on making sure that your new website adds additional income on top.
We do this by designing your website so that it doesn’t just make up the lost revenue that your current website is losing you, but by ALSO turning as many visitors as possible into customers (see here).
How we Do It
The key to it all is understanding human psychology, and particularly how people behave when they visit a website – what they expect to see, need to see, and need to feel in order to assure them that you can deliver what they want.
People (and you will do this too) always visit any website with the starting point of scepticism.
They believe that you are after their business and will tell them whatever they want to hear in order to get their money from them.
It might sound cynical, but this is human nature, and it is often based on their own previous experiences.
The aim and sole objective of your website is to overcome these subconscious attitudes, and to not just build confidence in you, but to remove their resistance to using you.
Your website is not there to do all of the selling for you – people buy from people, not websites, especially where it is a personal and emotional service that you are offering.
Your websites job is to remove their concerns and build their trust so that they feel comfortable in seriously considering you and then contacting you.
And our websites are designed to achieve this outcome as efficiently and effectively as possible.
The layout, wording, and design of our websites are based on what has actually been tested and measured to achieve this specific outcome, not just by us, but by numerous other marketing and website design specialists and experts.
But we focus all of this specifically at people looking for a Funeral Director.
Included in our web design service, you get the following:
- A mobile friendly website so that it works properly on ALL devices – this stops 50%+ of your visitors from just leaving and going somewhere else;
- A website designed to convert those visitors into customers – we focus on removing their doubts and worries and producing a site that takes them from arriving at the site to getting in touch with you as seamlessly as possible;
- We give your visitors additional confidence in you via testimonials and via our review service (see here);
- Help you to increase visitor numbers by creating a Google friendly website that will rank better in search results, helping more people to find you;
- We will also overhaul your existing Adwords campaigns to reduce costs and increase sales, or help you to set up an Adwords campaign if you don’t have one but want one;
- A full listing that appears at the top of the page on our Funeral Directors directory;
- We watch how the internet is evolving and make sure that your website adapts and changes to embrace new requirements;
Most web designers focus on making their websites look “pretty” and adding “impressive” “bells and whistles”, but haven’t got a clue about what makes people actually spend their money with you.
We focus 100% on getting you more business. Full stop. That is all that counts.
This is because that is all that really matters for any serious business that want to remain IN business.
There’s an old saying that it’s no good being the richest man in the graveyard – well the 21st Century equivalent is that it’s no good having the prettiest website in the business graveyard.
The internet is still in real terms quite young, and it is evolving.
You need to be 100% on top of it all, having a website designed by experts that will keep you alive and maximise your earnings today, and that can be adjusted tomorrow to keep you at the top of the game as requirements evolve yet again.
We can do all of that for you, and at just £1450 for a website that will do everything listed above plus the extra benefits – a website that will work on ALL devices, mobile or otherwise, AND convince people to choose you over your competitors, AND at ALMOST CERTAINLY less than you’re THROWING AWAY each and every month – well doesn’t it make sense?
Remember that most Funeral Directors will be doing NOTHING at all to increase their online business – this is your chance to take complete control and totally blow them out of the water.
Your choices are simple:
- Continue to THROW AWAY potentially £4000+ per month, every month, or £48,000+ per year, ad infinitum, or;
- Fix all of these issues for just £1450 now, and then add the potentially £4000+ per month onto your bottom line, ALONG WITH the additional business that your new website will bring you.
The difference is to continue as you are and lose maybe -£48,000 per year, or to spend £1450 now and potentially be £45,500 PLUS the ADDITIONAL business better off than you are now.
How much will that be for you?
£50,000 per year, £60,000 per year, £75,000 per year, or £100,000 or more per year?
Only you know the answer based on your own turnover, but we are certain that with our help we can increase your turnover dramatically.
All you need to do is to talk to us and we can discuss how we can help you to grow your business for a one-off very small investment that will continue to deliver results to you for years to come.
